Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Significant Alliance Formed Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The September revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
